Project Overview
As part of my UX design journey, I set out to create an app aimed at helping chronic illness patients better manage their daily health tasks. Living with multiple chronic conditions, I wanted to build something that would provide much-needed organizational support for patients navigating a complex medical landscape. The app is designed to track medications and adherence, monitor symptoms, store medical information, and serve as a comprehensive health management tool, promoting better health outcomes and peace of mind for users.
Problem Statement
Managing chronic illnesses involves juggling complex tasks—medications, appointments, pharmacy and provider information, and symptom monitoring—leading to missed treatments and overwhelm.
CareCorner simplifies this by offering a unified platform that combines medication reminders, symptom tracking, and doctor management. The app empowers patients to stay organized and proactive in their healthcare, improving adherence and overall well-being.
Research and Discovery
User Research
To fully understand user pain points, I conducted surveys and interviews with chronic illness patients. The research revealed common frustrations, including forgotten medications, difficulty organizing doctor visits, and a lack of centralized health tracking. These insights shaped the core features of CareCorner, prioritizing simplicity, reminders, and comprehensive health data.

Defining Key Features

From the research, I identified the core functionalities that would add the most value to users:
-
Medication Management: Including dose reminders and tracking.
-
Appointment Tracking: A simple calendar view to manage doctor visits.
-
Symptom Tracker: Daily check-ins for users to log mood and symptoms.
-
Information Sharing: A simple way to share medications, symptoms, insurance and specialist information to providers.
-
Emergency Access: A quick-access section for users to store emergency medical information in the case of an emergency.
Competitive Analysis
After analyzing current health management apps, it became clear that none offered a complete solution for chronic illness patients.
Many apps focus on one aspect—medications or appointments—but fail to integrate all critical health tasks. CareCorner fills this gap by providing an all-in-one solution tailored specifically to the needs of chronic illness patients and parallel desktop access.

User Personas
I developed detailed personas to guide the design, focusing on users’ healthcare challenges and needs. These personas helped shape the app’s features and ensured the design met user expectations.

Challenges
One major challenge was designing a solution that was both comprehensive and easy to use. Chronic illness patients often deal with physical and mental fatigue, so the interface had to be simple and intuitive without sacrificing functionality. Another constraint was ensuring the app was accessible to a diverse range of users, from different ages to varying tech proficiency.
Usability Testing
Testing was crucial in refining the app. I conducted multiple rounds of usability tests with a small group of patients, gathering feedback on the design’s functionality and ease of use. The feedback led to adjustments, including more customizable refill trackers and more detailed provider information, such as satellite clinics.

UI Design
The UI design focused on creating a clean, minimalist interface that reduces cognitive load for users. The color scheme was chosen to create a calming and reassuring atmosphere, while iconography and typography were selected for easy readability. The UI was designed to guide users smoothly through their tasks, from setting reminders to tracking symptoms, with clear visual cues and hierarchy.
Accessibility Considerations
Accessibility was a core priority for CareCorner.
The app was designed to comply with WCAG 3.1 standards, including color contrast ratios, easy to read font (Open Sans), large text size (18pt), and user interface components (form input borders).
Testing with a diverse group of users ensured that the app was intuitive and accessible for all, regardless of physical or technical limitations.

Solution
Accessibility was a core priority for CareCorner.
CareCorner consolidates the management of medications, symptoms, and doctor appointments into one easy-to-use platform. Starting with user research, the app was designed through iterative prototyping and constant user feedback, focusing on simplicity and functionality. The final product is a comprehensive, user-centered solution that helps patients stay on top of their healthcare, reducing the stress associated with managing chronic illness.
Design Process
Our design process followed a user-first approach. We began with low-fidelity sketches and moved to wireframes, continuously refining the design based on user feedback. We prioritized a clean layout, easy navigation, and clear visual hierarchy to ensure the app was not only functional but also a joy to use.
Positive User Satisfaction
CareCorner received overwhelmingly positive feedback from users during testing. 95% of users reported higher satisfaction with their ability to manage medications and track symptoms compared to previous solutions. Users appreciated the simplicity, ease of navigation, and the peace of mind provided by timely reminders.
Outcomes
The prototype of the app received positive feedback during usability testing, demonstrating strong potential for improving the lives of chronic illness patients. Early insights from the testing phase revealed:
-
Potential for Increased Patient Compliance: Users responded positively to the medication reminder feature, suggesting it could help them adhere to their medication schedules once implemented.
-
Improved Health Insights Anticipated: The symptom tracker was well-received, with users noting that it could help them keep more detailed records for sharing with healthcare providers, potentially improving communication and care management in the future.
-
Positive User Reception: Testers appreciated the app’s ability to centralize their medical information, expressing that it would give them peace of mind, especially in emergency situations.
-
Usability Insights: Usability tests revealed a 90% task completion rate, suggesting the app’s interface is intuitive and easy to navigate. Participants felt that the app would help them stay more organized with their health management if fully developed.
Lessons Learned
Throughout the project, I learned the importance of empathy and inclusivity in design. Chronic illness patients have unique and often changing needs, so flexibility and customization are key. Additionally, it reinforced how crucial it is to involve users at every stage of the design process to ensure the app delivers real, meaningful value.
